Gastrotypographicalassemblage
Lou Dorfsman’s mural for the CBS cafeteria, from Eye no. 20 vol. 5
Lou Dorfsman died last week at 90.
The Web is full of tributes (old and recent) to the great CBS art director, including Steven Heller’s obit in the New York Times, Michael Bierut’s ‘The Four Lessons of Lou Dorfsman’ on Design Observer and Jim Schachterle’s ‘The Wall that Lou Dorfsman Built’ on Speak Up.
In Spring 1996, Eye published an Archive piece (see spread, above) about his celebrated ‘Gastrotypographicalassemblage’ (Eye no. 20 vol. 5).

A sad day indeed but an amazing response on the web from the design community. Now we need an exhibition where we can all go and see the saved wall. I think that would be fantastic. I wonder what’s in its place now?

[...] Rather late with this but had to acknowledge the passing late last month of the great Lou Dorfsman, one of my very few all-time design heroes. Read more here and here. More links on the Eye blog. [...]
