Eyeball pleasers

St Bride hosts a plethora of pencil-squeezers (and diamond geezers).

STOP PRESS:

MAKING PICTURES CONFERENCE POSTPONED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2012.

What is an illustrator? According to Martin O’Neill (top), quoting Ian Dury’s ‘There Ain’t Half Been Some Clever Bastards’, an illustrator is a ‘Pencil Squeezer, Eyeball Pleaser, Diamond Geezer.’ What do you think, asks Becky Chilcott.

Please join us to discuss this and more on 19 June 2012 at the St Bride Foundation for a one-day conference celebrating illustration and image-making [curated by Chilcott].

Ben Eine (above), Linzie Hunter, Kai and Sunny, John Lawrence, Martin O’Neill, Nic Rawling, Peter Schrank and Helen Stephens (below) will be sharing with us the inspiration, working processes and practices that inform and influence their work.

The conference aims to be something more than a show and tell of portfolios; we hope it will give the audience a real insight into the mind of the illustrator and what makes them tick. We will also be discussing the ever-changing role of illustration today as the boundaries between art, design, illustration and typography are becoming ever more blurred.

Illustrator in residence Mike Nicholson of Ensixteen Editions will be documenting the conference, and we will be inviting conference participants to share their own images of the day captured in sketchbooks produced specially for the event in conjunction with Fenner Paper.

Colin McHenry will be sharing his knowledge and give hints and tips on how to get illustration work in a lunchtime seminar.

As well as listening, delegates will also be able to have a go at doing by participating in demonstrations of book-binding, calligraphy, letterpress and wood engraving given by leading practitioners, enabling them to make their own pictures.
